Term Deposits

Overview

Enjoy a guaranteed interest rate when saving within a predefined timeline.

 

Key features
  • Provides a guaranteed interest rate in terms of 30 days to 5 years

  • Term deposits can compound, or interest can be paid to a chequing or savings account

  • Redeemable with penalty and non-redeemable available

Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)

Overview

A tax-sheltered account to grow your savings and meet short- and long-term investment goals. 

Key features
  • Available to Canadians 18 or older

  • Contribute up to $7,000 for 2024

  • Capital gains and other investment income will not be taxed

  • Withdrawals are allowed and will be tax-free

  • Unused TFSA contribution room can be carried forward to future years indefinitely

First Home Savings Account (FHSA)

Overview

A savings account to help Canadians 18 or older save for their first home, tax-free.

Key features
  • For first-time buyers who did not live in a home they owned, or that was owned by their spouse or common-law partner at any time in the last four years
  • Contributions are tax-deductible but limited to $8,000 per year, up to a lifetime limit of $40,000

  • When a qualifying withdrawal is made to purchase a home, no tax is withheld on the withdrawal and the amount withdrawn is not considered taxable income

  • Withdrawals for another purpose will be subject to withholding tax and must be included in income

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)

Overview

A tax-deferred government-approved plan to save for retirement.

Key features
  • Monthly or biweekly preauthorized contributions available

  • Personal contribution limits based on earned income

  • Investments can be made in a variable account or fixed term deposits of 1 to 5 years

  • Funds must be moved into a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) the year you turn 71

Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF)

Overview

A registered account for drawing income from your RRSP.

Key features
  • Funds can be held in a variable account or fixed term deposits of 1 to 5 years

  • Statement is provided anually

Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP)

Overview

The RESP is a registered account for saving for post-secondary education.

Key features
  • Income earned within the plan is not taxed until withdrawn

  • Single or family plans available

  • Most secondary institutions and programs, including correspondence courses, qualify for payments

  • Additional funding is provided by the Canadian Education Savings Grant

  • The credit union acts as an agent for Concentra.

Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

Overview

A savings plan to help individuals with disabilities and their families save for long-term needs.

Key features
  • Government incentives like the Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) and the Canada Disability Savings Bond (CDSB) are available
  • Tax-sheltered interest earnings while in the plan
  • The credit union acts as an agent for Concentra.
